Keep your website clean and take advantage of bringing attention to a certain area by using white space. Don’t be afraid of not using space on your website because it’s better to have your main content stick out by having white space around it.
Your logo should be placed always be placed to the TOP LEFT of your website because that is the first thing that users typically see when they arrive on your website. You want to make a good first impression when users visit your page because there are millions of websites out there for people to choose from and users can be picky on which websites they go to. Responsive design is one of the most important aspects of designing your website especially in today’s society. Your website has to be able to adapt to many different devices and screen sizes. So how exactly can we make our design responsive?
media queries will allow you to change anything on the website depending on different targeted elements such as pixels, ems, max or min width and much more. They are a great alternative to creating a different website for each screen size or device. Go responsive and get more out of your site!
Your font that you use on your website is a very important element of your website. Custom fonts should be used on your website but you should limit how much they are used because it could affect the load time of your website significantly. If it were up to me I would only use custom fonts in text you want to stick out like your header text, logo text, navigation text, and footer text. I wouldn’t use custom fonts on the “<p>” tag just because if you have a lot of content it could make your website slow and laggy.
When possible always use imported stylesheets and js files. Linking in external files to your website can not only save precious load time on your website but it also keeps your code organized so it’s easier to work in. If you want to increase the load time of your website you should also put whatever js files you can at the bottom of your website which will result in faster load times for your website. If you are using Jquery don’t host the files on your website because the files are already hosted courtesy of Google and will load faster if you import the js files that are hosted on Google.
Loading JQUERY libraries from google (copy this into your html page)
Don’t forget about meta data. Meta data is really important in web design because it tells the search engine bots the information needed to display your website in search engines and the information should be filled out and accurate to your website.
why is getting your website SSL certified important? SSL is important because it improves your SEO rating of your website and puts you above websites that are not SSL certified. All SSL does is changes your precious http:// to https:// and basically ensures that all data that travels between the site and the browser stays private by encrypting it. Bottom line if Google sees your website is SSL certified it will boost your overall SEO and move you up on the list of websites in Google giving your site a huge advantage. Unfortunately it is not free and cost about $140 a year depending on your hosting provider.
